Roller Derby

BüzE – Bürgerzentrum Ehrenfeld

Whether in sports or in pop culture, the good old roller skate is always up for a revival. Roller Derby is the name of both a feminist-influenced roller skating sport and an indie-pop trio from Hamburg founded in 2020, whose music bridges the gap between nostalgic, wavy 80s sounds and modern indie-pop.

At a 'real' roller derby jam, there's pushing, shoving and blocking. When Philine Meyer (vocals, keys), Manuel Romero Soria (guitar) and Max Nielsen (bass) jam, on the other hand, things are much more light-hearted and harmonious. Turn off the gym lights, turn on the fog machine and we're getting closer to the whole thing.

Warm synth pads spread out in the room, Philine Meyer's vocals float above them, reminiscent of Victoria Legrand from Dream Pop duo Beach House or folk singer Angel Olsen in terms of dreaminess and nostalgia. Echoing chorus guitars evoke memories of those nights when a The Cure song is put on late at night and tiredness once again gives way to a feeling of euphoria. Euphoria, melancholy, longing and loss, all that Roller Derby transports in their songs without sounding aloof. This is not least ensured by the unexcited but danceable grooves of bass and drums, which provide the right grounding for all the floating.

Dreaming and dancing, both find equal place in Roller Derby's sound cosmos. Timeless indie pop that could actually be played quite well behind 'Friday I'm In Love'. So leave the hall light off, in the blue fog we'll go for another round...

The Roller Derby concert is part of the project "Wunderkinder - German Music Talent 2022", in cooperation with the Reeperbahn Festival and funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
